Helping Children
Flourish
We strive to encourage a love of reading in the young citizens of Henderson and Chester County. We have three different youth book clubs so children of different ages can read age-appropriate materials and grow their love of books with peers. Each group meets at a different time during the year, so mark your calendar for the next time it’s offered!
Middle School
Middle School book club is offered during June & July to students who have finished third through fifth grade in either public school or homeschool.
Junior High
Junior High book club is offered during the months of September, October, and November for students who are in sixth, seventh, or eighth grade.
Middle
School
Book Club
The Middle School Book Club meets every Thursday from 2 pm to 3 pm during the months of June & July for children who have finished 3rd through 5th grades.
Children aren’t required to attend every week but they MUST register.
Each week the children will receive a book that they’ll discuss the following week. They will also get to help design a t-shirt that they will receive at the last meeting in July (at no cost) during the Middle School Book Club pizza party.
What does it cost to participate?
Some years the books are covered by a grant and sometimes the books will either need to be purchased (cost is kept between $5.00 and $10.00). In May of each year, it will be announced if the books will cost anything and if so, what the cost will be. If you prefer not to purchase the book there may also be an option to ILL (interlibrary loan) the books so that they can be borrowed for free.
What do the children do during book club?
The first half of the meeting consists of book discussion led by the library director. A quarter of the meeting will have book discussions led by the children. The final quarter of the meeting will consist of an activity that relates to the book read.
Some examples of activities in the past are creating posters and information about how we can save sea turtles when on vacation, creating an escape box for the book Holes, and each child getting to use software that book illustrators use to create the images for their books.
What books do the Middle School Book Clubbers read?
Each year, the children will read a variety of genres and formats including a nonfiction, fiction, biography, and graphic novel. Some titles from the past couple of years can be seen below.
Saving Winslow by Sharon Creech
Sea Turtle Rescue by Karen Romano
Tale of Despereaux by Kate Dicamillo
